Earlier this month, a 13-year-old girl was seriously injured by a hit-and-run vehicle in Houston. Police are trying to identify the vehicle that hit the girl.
The accident occurred around 6:30 pm on October 2, when the girl was walking on Ella Boulevard with her brother. They were trying to cross the street when the girl was hit by the car. The driver fled the scene without stopping. Police believe the vehicle was possibly a black Chevy Cruze or Kia Forte.
Hit-and-run drivers can cause some of the worst types of accidents in terms of damage to the victims. Not only did the driver cause the injuries, but they also left the scene without taking any responsibility for their actions, including financial responsibility. Hit-and-run accidents are more common than you may think – it’s been estimated that over 10 percent of all car accidents involve hit-and-run drivers. By law, no driver should leave the scene of an accident if an injury has occurred.
Fortunately, even if the driver is never found, help may be available for some hit-and-run victims. In some cases, a claim can be filed with the injured party’s automobile insurance company. Many accident victims do not realize that their own policy can cover them even if they were not in their vehicle and were hit by another driver. Uninsured motorist coverage can pay for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, therapy, and even pain and suffering.
Victims of hit and run accidents should seek the help of an experienced hit and run accident lawyer who can help them get the best settlement from their insurance company.
