Bicyclist Struck And Killed By Houston Police Officer

Tragically, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a Houston police cruiser in the 6900 block of N. Wayside Drive earlier this month. The police officer was responding to a call about a suicide without lights and siren when he hit the biker. It’s believed that the bicyclist, who was a 29-year-old male, failed to yield the right of way before entering an intersection, where he was struck. An eyewitness captured the accident on his dashcam video.

The public had questions for why the police vehicle was not using its emergency lights and siren at the time of the accident. The HPD chief released a statement clarifying that the incident that the officers were en route to at the time of the accident was a priority two call for a potential suicide-in-progress. Priority two calls normally do not use emergency equipment, unless the officer has additional information justifying the use of emergency equipment. In this case, it was not needed.

The HPD plans on reviewing department policies and traffic laws in relation to this accident.
