Eyedrops Sold At Walmart, Walgreens Recalled Due To Sterility Issues

Some over the counter eyedrops and ointments sold at Walmart and Walgreens, as well as some prescription eye ointments sold at other stores have been recalled because they may not be sterile. Altair Pharmaceuticals Inc. issued voluntary recalls for eye products sold at Walgreens and Walmart, and another recall for Perrigo prescription ointments.

The recalls involve 23 different products under various names, and the recall announced that they have the “potential for nonsterility”. The recalls have been done as a precaution only, and fortunately the pharmacy has not received any reports of adverse events. However, if a non-sterile eye product is used, it can result in serious or potential life-threatening infections or death, according to the recall notice.

The pharmaceutical company recalled five different products from Walgreens that were produced under the store’s brand. From Walmart, 10 products under the Equate brand and one eye drop under the Support Harmony brand were recalled. The pharmaceutical company also recalled lots of prescription ointments that were made exclusively for Perrigo.

Any pharmaceutical products must be manufactured with a very high level of care. Not only should the product be safe for its intended use, it should also treat the condition for which it is intended to be used, with minimal side effects.
