Honda recently announced a recall of 1.6 million Honda and Acura cars in order to replace potentially deadly Takata front passenger airbag inflators. This recall is a planned recall and is the final phase of the Takata recall by Honda. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall is six months ahead of schedule.
Honda says that it is encouraging each owner of an affected car to schedule a repair at the dealership as soon as possible, and that replacement parts are available. Honda is also offering free rental cars to the vehicles’ owners while the repair is ongoing. This recall includes many Honda and Acura vehicles with model years between 2003 and 2015.
The Takata airbag recall has affected virtually all major automakers. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2017 as a result of the recall. The airbags that were recalled were found to have defective inflators, which could cause the airbag to explode when it deployed, which could send shrapnel flying throughout the vehicle. Twenty-four people have been killed as a result of the inflators and hundred more have been injured. When this most recent recall is finished by Honda, the company says it will have recalled or accounted for about 22.6 million inflators in 12.9 million vehicles.
