Police are investigating a drunk driving crash that occurred in west Houston. The crash killed two people. Three more were taken to the hospital. According to police, just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, a Cadillac crashed into a Lexus. The accident occurred on Richmond near Hillcroft. The two people inside the Lexus were killed. The driver of the Cadillac and the two occupants of the Cadillac were intoxicated, according to the District Attorney.
This accident is unfortunately not uncommon. Even though laws have become increasingly harsh against drunk drivers over the decades and the public has been very well educated on the dangers of drunk driving, thousands of Americans are killed in drunk driving accidents every year. Between one-quarter and one-third of all automobile fatalities are caused by drunk drivers.
Drunk drivers typically face criminal charges as a result of their actions. However, they can also be held liable for any injuries or deaths they cause in a civil court. The fact that they were drinking and driving can be used to show negligence. Under Texas law, claims can be brought for damages arising out of drunk driving accidents. Normally, the accident victims either pursue negligence lawsuits or wrongful death lawsuits.
If you have been injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, you should speak with an attorney.
