Dirty surgical instruments can often lead to infections. This can be especially serious for young children, the elderly, or patients with compromised immune systems. Instruments that are commonly used in surgeries have become smaller and much more complex in recent years, which can make them extremely challenging to clean.
In recent years, there have been outbreaks across the country of a serious form of bacteria which have been linked to unsanitary medical equipment. In particular, endoscopes are very complex medical tools which are expensive, and hard to disinfect and clean. As a result of the outbreaks, questions have been raised about the lengths to which hospitals and doctors’ offices go to keep their facilities and equipment clean. In 2015, the FDA announced that it was aware of and was closely monitoring the risks of infections associated with endoscopes.
If you believe that you have been harmed by unsanitary medical equipment, you should speak with an attorney. Medical malpractice cases in Texas are notoriously difficult to pursue, but if you were harmed by a doctor or a hospital, you should take steps to receive compensation. Normally, you will have to prove that the doctor or the facility was negligent, that you were harmed as a result, and that you suffered damages.
