Senior citizens deserve respect and a high level of care. Unfortunately, many long-term care facilities in the U.S. fail to provide that high level of care, and often patients are unable to voice their concerns. If you believe your mother is not being treated well, you should take steps immediately to improve the situation. Speak to management about your concerns, speak out to state authorities in charge of nursing home oversight, and move your mother to another facility if possible.
Nursing homes are a big business in the U.S. Almost 1.5 million people live in nursing homes in the U.S. Many of them fail to provide an adequate level of care. Nursing home workers are often underpaid and overworked. Staffing shortages are a major problem in the industry, as well as abuse and neglect by the employees.
If a patient is neglected in a nursing home, there are some common situations that care arise. Patients may develop bedsores. They may suffer from malnutrition or dehydration. They may fall repeatedly or choke on their food.
If a nursing home fails to abide by state and federal standards, it can lose its license. In addition, any patients harmed by the facility can sue for damages. Some common cases involving nursing homes include cases involving physical harm, neglect, medication errors, sexual assaults, wandering, dropped patients, and even wrongful death.
