The lives of patients can be placed at serious risk if doctors and other medical professionals do not take appropriate actions to prevent the spread of infections during and after surgery. Unfortunately, infections after surgery are on the rise, particularly due to a rise in the number of drug resistant bacteria strains.
It’s been estimated that about 200 people die every day because of an infection after a surgical procedure. Although there is increasing awareness about the problem, and more procedures in place to help prevent the infections, they are still rising. In many instances, it’s because of a breach in the duty of care to the patient. Some examples of a breach of care that could lead to a post-surgery infection include using contaminated tools, discharging patients from the hospital before they are ready, or being exposed to a contaminated environment after the surgery.
In some cases, the doctor may have done everything correctly, and the patient still contracted an infection after surgery. If the patient develops an infection, in most cases the patient will be able to make a recovery and fully heal, as long as the infection is treated quickly. However, if the doctor fails to diagnose an infection, the patient may experience severe complications, including septic shock, amputation, and death.
If you have contracted an infection after an operation, you should speak with an attorney. The doctors and hospital may not be liable for your injuries, but they may. An attorney can help evaluate your case and make a recommendation.
