Any rear-end car accident can cause a great deal of damage to the vehicle and its occupants. There are roughly 2.5 million rear-end collisions in the U.S. every year. However, when the rear-ending vehicle is a large truck that weighs several tons, it’s likely that the injuries and vehicle damage will be catastrophic. There are roughly 42,000 rear-end accidents each year involving tractor trailers in which the tractor trailer hits another vehicle.
There are a number of reasons that truck accidents involving semi-trucks are so dangerous. They are often over 40 times heavier than the other vehicles involved. The weight of these vehicles striking a smaller passenger car can cause serious long-term injuries and even death. In addition, the stopping distance for large trucks is much longer than for smaller vehicles. Finally, in about 20 percent of tractor trailer rear-end collisions studied, three or more vehicles are involved.
In most rear-end collisions, the vehicle striking from the rear is usually blamed. However, when the vehicle is a large commercial truck, the driver may have been responsible for the accident but the company that employs the driver is likely to be financially responsible. Most commercial trucking companies are used to fighting legal battles and will try to pay as little in damages to the injured party.
