Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. For years, the manufacturers of asbestos hid the dangers from the public, which placed millions at risk of premature death.
Mesothelioma results from the accumulation of asbestos fibers in the lungs. Since it can happen slowly, many victims live for years or decades without any symptoms before the onset of the disease. Many people develop mesothelioma long after they left the environment in which they were exposed to the disease. It’s common for mesothelioma to be mistaken for other common respiratory illnesses, but normally symptoms progress quickly.
Although asbestos is not used now, it was commonly used in a number of industries a few decades ago. Some industries that used asbestos include construction, steel manufacturing, railroads, manufacturing facilities, insulation manufacturing and installation, carpentry, and many more. Asbestos manufacturers became aware of a link between their products and illnesses as early as 1920, but they continued to produce and sell products containing asbestos, and hid the dangers from the public. By 1970, many products containing asbestos were banned. Since it can take as long as 50 years for victims to develop mesothelioma after exposure, people are still becoming ill today from the disease, even though they were exposed decades ago.
