Johnson & Johnson is currently in the middle of a stream of lawsuits relating to its baby powder. The company is currently appealing a $4.69 billion judgment and it is facing about 13,000 similar lawsuits across the U.S.
The claims stem from the baby powder it sells, which many claim contains asbestos, a known carcinogen. The company says that its product is safe and does not contain asbestos. The powder has been on sale since 1893. In 2018, a court in Missouri linked the powder to ovarian cancer. The judge ordered that the company set aside $6 billion to ensure that plaintiffs are compensated, should the appeal fail.
The issue with the powder involves talc, which is a mineral that can contain asbestos. Johnson & Johnson uses talc in its powder, but says it only uses pure, pharmaceutical-grade talc. Experts disagree about whether the powder is safe. Experts for the plaintiffs in a recent lawsuit said that microscopic asbestos fibers can enter the body when the powder is inhaled or applied to the skin. The plaintiffs claim that the company knew that its powder was unsafe and failed to tell consumers.
These baby powder lawsuits are unlikely to go away anytime soon. The company has been settling some of the lawsuits and defending others.
