Many Daycare Centers Using Recalled Children’s Products

When recalls are issued for dangerous children’s products, parents who learn of the recall typically dispose of the products immediately. However, many recalled products can still be found in use in daycare centers.

For example, many daycare centers continue to use the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper. Almost 30 babies died in them, and five million of the sleepers were recalled earlier this year. However, the product is still in use. A survey found that about 10 percent of daycare centers that responded to a survey reported still using the sleeper as well as another recalled sleeper, the Kids II Rocking Sleeper. Even in states that have passed laws banning recalled products in daycare centers, the sleepers were still in use. About 18 states have passed such laws.

The recall system in the U.S. has flaws. Although recalls effectively remove dangerous products from stores, getting the products that have already been sold back is much harder. It can be easy for parents and daycare providers to miss recall notices in the news. Safety advocates believe that companies should take more proactive steps to directly reach consumers to warn them about recalls. Advocates also believe that companies should be responsible for directly notifying childcare providers about recalls as well.
