Pfizer has recalled a migraine medication because of potential contamination with bacteria. The recall was for Relpax in 40-milligram tablets.
The bacteria the medication could potentially be contaminated with is from the genus pseudomonas and the genus burkholderia. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause serious, life-threatening infections. The people who are most at risk for becoming seriously ill from the bacteria are those with compromised immune systems.
Pfizer did not disclose how the medications could have potentially become infected. Patients with the recalled medication should return it to their pharmacy. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injury because of the contamination.
Pharmaceutical companies have a duty to manufacture medications that are safe for their customers. If they fail in their duty, they can be held legally responsible. Pharmaceutical companies make billions in profits each year and can be forced to compensate their customers for any harm caused by their medications.
