Unfortunately, injuries during childbirth are not uncommon. Most injuries are minor and can be treated easily. However, some injuries can cause problems that can cause a great deal of pain and can last for years or even a lifetime.
In some situations, forceps must be used during delivery. Forceps are an instrument that resemble salad tongs, and they are used on a baby’s head to help guide the baby out during delivery. Forceps may be used during the second stage of labor if the labor isn’t progressing or if the baby’s health requires an immediate delivery. If a forceps delivery fails, a C-section may be needed. Therefore, forceps deliveries should only be done in hospitals where C-sections can be performed. Also, forceps deliveries are not recommended in some cases. If the baby is too big or is not far enough in the birth canal, if the position of the baby’s head is unknown, or if the baby has certain medical conditions, forceps should not be used.
Forceps deliveries can harm the mother and the child. In the mother, a delivery using forceps can cause damage to the urinary tract, anemia, uterine rupture, and pelvic organ prolapse. The child can suffer injuries to the face, including paralysis, skull fractures, seizures, and swelling or internal bleeding.
