Choking is terrifying for anyone, but especially for an elderly person who may have a lot of physical limitations. If your parent was harmed in a nursing home as a result of a choking incident, you should speak with a Houston attorney about your options.
Many nursing home residents are at risk of choking because of difficulties swallowing. A number of physical conditions can interfere with swallowing, including dementia and Alzheimer’s, cancer, a number of neurological conditions, or simply aging. A doctor will normally determine the issue and make a recommendation on the patient’s diet.
Unfortunately, many nursing homes do not correctly supervise the food intake of patients. If a nursing home fails to enforce diet restrictions or does not properly monitor a patient while he or she is eating, there is a risk of choking. Many choking incidents that occur at nursing homes could have been prevented very easily if the doctors had properly followed medical orders.
