It can be difficult for patients to keep track of their prescription medications, particularly if they are taking more than one medication at a time. Experts say that no matter which medication you are taking, there are two things you need to remember to stay safe. You need to remember what you are taking each medication for, and which side effects could be expected as a result of that medication.
Many medications do not interact well with others. Some medications could result in other medications becoming less effective or even stronger than they would be alone. Medications are also recalled fairly frequently, which patients may or may not learn about in a timely manner. It’s recommended that you speak with your pharmacist regularly about your medications, side effects, whether the medications interact well with one another, and how you would be notified if a medication was recalled.
After you get the medication home, the next step is keeping it safe. It should be kept out of the reach of children or anyone else who may take it. It should also be stored in a cool, dry place that is low humidity.
If you are concerned about the safety of your prescription medications, you should speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Although overall, the pharmaceutical industry is very safe in the U.S., there can be issues. Drugs may be rushed to the market and could be unsafe, or a drug that is normally safe may become contaminated during the manufacturing process.
