Stryker Announces Recall Of Hip Implant

Stryker, an orthopedics company, recently issued a recall letter, announcing that one of its hip implant heads had a higher than expected series of product failures. These hip components were manufactured between 2001 and 2011. None of the products were removed from the stream of commerce, because all of the hip components have either been implanted or expired.

The manufacturer had not given the public much information about the recall, but has stated that there have been issues with the femoral stems not fitting the hip implant heads. In the past, Stryker has had problems with its femoral stem and head junction. The company has paid hundreds of millions of dollars already to settle lawsuits involving another type of hip implant.

There are a number of lawsuits pending against several other types of Stryker femoral stems. In some cases, the stems are too small to properly secure the head. In other cases, metal particles have become scratched from certain types of movement, and have entered the hip compartment, which causes a condition called metallosis. Metallosis can damage tissue in the hip department. Typically, the only cure is surgery.
