Technology Advances Make Front Seat Safest Place To Ride

For decades, riding in the back seat was considered the safest place to be in a vehicle. However, seatbelt technology has changed. Experts now say that depending on the vehicle, the front seat may be safer than the back seat for many.

The technology that has changed in recent years involves seatbelt sensors. New sensors are contained in many new vehicles that automatically tighten the seatbelt when an imminent crash is detected. Also, if a passenger is pressed too tightly against the seatbelt, the sensors can loosen the belt. In some cases, seatbelts that are too tight can cause serious or even fatal injuries.

The NHTSA now says that in those vehicles with the new technology in the front, the front seat is the safest place to sit. However, for children under 13, the back seat is still preferred. This is because although seatbelt technology has changed, the injury patterns for children are different than for adults.

Many vehicles are offering the new seatbelt technology for front seat passengers, but few are installing those seatbelts in rear seats. For those vehicles that do offer the sensors in rear seats, the back seat is the safest place to sit.
