Traffic Deaths And Costs May Be Highest Since 2007

Traffic deaths are 14 percent higher through the first six months of 2015 than they were during the same period in 2014. Serious injuries due to car accidents are 30 percent higher.

From January 1 until June 30, almost 19,000 people died in traffic accidents in the U.S. Over 2.2 million people were seriously injured and required medical attention. These statistics put the U.S. on pace for its deadliest driving year since 2007.

In addition to the increase in deaths and injuries, the costs related to these accidents are also up. The six-month bill for traffic deaths, injuries, and property damage is estimated to be $152 billion, which is 24 percent higher than in 2014. Auto insurers including GEICO, Allstate and Progressive have reported that they are seeing a rise in claims.

It’s not clear why this huge increase has occurred. Experts are speculating that there are more people on the roads, which could lead to more traffic accidents and deaths. Average gas prices are 30 percent lower than they were in 2014, which means that more people can afford to drive and may travel longer distances. In addition, the unemployment rate is lower and more people are on the roads driving to work.
