Volkswagen has just issued a recall for almost 680,000 Jettas, Beetle coupes and convertibles, GTI hatchbacks, and Golf hatchbacks and wagons. The recall was issued because it was discovered that in those vehicles it may be possible to remove the ignition key when the shift lever isn’t in park.
The recall is only for vehicles that have automatic transmission, a manual parking brake, and keyless entry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the driver removes the key from the ignition when the vehicle isn’t in park, the vehicle may roll away. A spokesperson for Volkswagen announced that the company is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the problem. Owners of the vehicles should contact Volkswagen. Dealers will install replacement parts at no charge to owners.
There are more vehicle recalls now than ever before. A number of factors are to blame – vehicles are more complex now, which means that there are more parts that could potentially fail. Also, many vehicle manufacturers use standard parts that are made by just a handful of suppliers, so if one of the parts fails, it’s likely that large numbers of vehicles will have the same part.
Vehicle manufacturers have a duty to keep their customers safe in their vehicles. If you or a loved one has been injured because of a defective vehicle, you should speak with an attorney. We can help. Call us today to learn more.
