The Jones Act helps protect maritime workers. For workers who work on boats, offshore oil rigs, or at docks or harbors, there is a high chance of injury. Different laws apply to accidents that occur at sea than to accidents that occur on land, and that area of law is called admiralty law.
There are a number of federal laws that give maritime workers legal rights in the event they are injured on the job. The Jones Act protects seamen who have been injured on the job. The Jones Act also allows seamen to sue for negligence committed by an employer. The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act allows maritime workers who work on harbors, ports, or docks, and who are injured on the job to seek benefits while they are recovering from their injuries.
Maintenance and Cure allows maritime employees who have been injured on the job to have their medical bills covered, and to receive compensation while they are recovering. Maintenance and Cure is similar to workers’ compensation.
If a maritime worker is injured or killed on a boat, or is lost at sea, the worker’s loved ones may be able to recover under the Death on the High Seas Act.
