Since 1954, patients have been prescribed warfarin, a blood thinning drug that is designed to prevent strokes and other cardiovascular issues. The drug, also known as Coumadin, has been taken by more than two million Americans. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Coumadin’s competitor, Xarelto. The goal of the two drugs is largely similar. Unfortunately, however, the use of Xarelto has been associated with severe injury and even death.
